Michael Schrefl schloss 1983 sein Diplomstudium der Informatik an der Technischen Universität (TU) Wien ab. Von 1983 bis 1984 studierte er als Fulbright-Stipendiat Künstlichen Intelligenz an der Vanderbilt University, Nashville, TN. Daran anschließend war er von 1985 bis 1992 Universitätsassistent am Institut für Angewandte Informatik – Datenbanken und Künstliche Intelligenz (DBAI) der TU Wien. Im Rahmen der Arbeit an seiner Dissertation verbrachte er 1987/88 einen einjährigen Forschungsaufenthalt an der Gesellschaft für Mathematik und Datenverarbeitung (GMD, heute: Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft) und erwarb 1988 sein Doktorat der technischen Wissenschaften an der TU Wien. 1991 habilitierte er sich an der TU Wien für Angewandte Informatik und erhielt unmittelbar danach einen Ruf an die Johannes Kepler Universität (JKU) Linz als Ordentlicher Universitätsprofessor für Wirtschaftsinformatik.

Im Jahre 1998 wurde er an die University of South Australia (UniSA), Adelaide, als Professor für Computer & Information Science berufen, an der er von 1998 bis 2000 vollzeit tätig war. Seit seiner Rückkehr an die JKU Linz im Jahre 2000 ist er durch Forschungskooperation und jährliche Forschungsaufenthalte mit der UniSA weiter eng verbunden. Seine Forschungsprojekte wurden durch FWF (Österreichischer Wissenschaftsfond), FFG (Österreichische Forschungsförderungsgesellschaft), ARC (Australian Research Council), EU Horizon 2020 (EU-Förderprogramm für Forschung und Innovation) gefördert. Er kann über 150 begutachtete Veröffentlichungen im Bereich Data & Knowledge Engineering in internationalen Fachzeitschriften und Tagungsbänden internationaler Konferenzen vorweisen.

Michael Schrefl leitet derzeit das Institut für Wirtschaftsinformatik – Data & Knowledge Engineering an der Johannes Kepler Universität Linz mit aktuellen, durch die EU im Forschungsprogramm Horizon Europe geförderten, kooperativen Forschungsprojekten zum Einsatz Künstlicher Intelligenz in der Luftfahrt.
